When I first arrived in San Miguel, I visited a few authentic haciendas - majestic and sprawling places with green areas, stables, ancient chapels and grand stone walls. As much as I loved their history and charm, they were neither affordable nor conveniently located. I wished their was a hacienda-like home for the “rest of us.” And now there is.
This property is situated in a secure, charming enclave of three similarly styled homes. It includes grand stone walls, a shared green area and even an ancient chapel, and yet, because it’s located at the point where Centro meets Barrio La Palmita, it’s just a 15 minute walk to the Parroquia and even less to upper Centro. The landscaping is full of mature trees and plants indigenous to this part of Mexico - cactus, succulents and bougainvillea, cobblestone paths, and includes a real treat - a dramatic pool adorned with columns and a large, central tree that provides a lovely shaded canopy for swimmers and sunbathers. There’s also a covered porch that spans the back perimeter of the house and provides yet another tranquil and picturesque outdoor living area, wonderful for morning coffee, cocktails or a b-b-q.
The house welcomes you inside with a beautifully carved wood front door and rich ceiling treatment. As soon as you enter, you’ll notice that the interior of this home continues the hacienda theme. The foyer is spacious and could also double as a formal dining area on special occasions. The living room features a cantera fireplace, a wood beamed ceiling and dramatic stone walls. Numerous windows bring in plenty of sunlight, and iron candelabras hang ready to illuminate the evenings.
The kitchen, with its touch of French country styling, is warm and inviting. It includes artisanal woodwork and an adjoining dining area which looks out over the front porch and garden. A small, conveniently located office nook sits just off this dining area.
Follow the sun, that is, the light-filled staircase with sky-light, and you’ll reach the bedrooms upstairs. The master is well-proportioned and enjoys its own terrace with expansive views. The master bath boasts double sinks and a large tub.
The second bedroom is cute and comfortable, and shares a bath with the third sunny bedroom.
Continue one floor up and you’ll find the rooftop terrace, which is quite spacious, ready for entertaining, and will impress your guests with its amazing views of the entire city and surrounding hills.
Ultimately, a “hacienda” that feels like home.
